HBT: Hey, Alfonso Soriano is hitting again!

Alfonso Soriano?s huge contract and disappointing production already made him the target of Cubs fans? scorn, so when he got off to a slow start this season that only increased along with the perception that his presence was playing a part in top prospect Anthony Rizzo remaining in the minors.

But a funny thing happened on the way to Soriano being washed up: He started hitting again.

Soriano had a .200 batting average, zero extra-base hits, and a measly .420 OPS on April 23, but in 29 games since then he?s hit .306 with seven homers, nine doubles, and a .923 OPS.

Soriano might have already been a goner if not for the fact that the Cubs are paying him $18 million this season and owe him the same salaries in 2013 and 2014, but whatever the reason for his remaining Chicago?s everyday left fielder the story surrounding his hitting ability at age 36 has changed dramatically.

There?s still no chance of the Cubs finding a taker for the rest of Soriano?s contract, but at least he?s not just ?the guy holding back Rizzo? any longer. For now, anyway.

Unemployed veterans skilled in doing jobs, not in finding them

A Monster.com survey finds employers and veterans agree: Departing military personnel have civilian job skills. Language, however, is a problem. One hurdle is translating military jargon.

By Mary Wiltenburg,?Contributor / May 30, 2012

Krista Titus, coordinator for the Employment Resource Center at the Arizona National Guard Papago base, 5636 E. McDowell Road, prepares to look through some of the more than 1,300 applications of military veterans inside the white folders who are looking for jobs, on May 1.

Mike Sakal/East Valley Tribune/AP

Veterans today are having a harder time finding jobs than most Americans ? but why??They leave the military with sought-after skills.?Most are willing to move for the right job.?Employers who hire them overwhelmingly say they?re glad they did.?

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "off"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

So what?s the problem??In April, Monster.com, the world?s largest job-search site, and its subsidiary Military.com, the biggest online resource for current and former service members, surveyed 900 employers and more than 900 returning veterans in an effort to find out.?

Their results, released Wednesday in their second, semiannual Veterans Talent Index (VTI), found that majorities of both veterans and employers feel that men and women are leaving the military well prepared to do civilian jobs, but badly prepared to land them.?

?There?s a communication gap here,? says T.L. McCreary, president of Military.com.??It seems like the veteran and the employer talking past each other, at times.?

One hurdle is learning to speak with less military jargon.

Take the example of a Navy fire controlman, the person who operates a ship?s weapons systems and fires its missiles.?On discharge, if he sends a resume full of military acronyms and Tomahawk missiles to a computer or electronics company, he?s unlikely to even get an interview.?Translated into civilian language, though, his qualifications could be perfect, since his day-to-day military work was operating, maintaining, and repairing sophisticated microcomputers.?Whether the veteran can spell that out could mean the difference between a good job and an unemployment statistic.?

?There?s misunderstanding on both sides of the aisle,? says Jason Hansman, membership director for the nonprofit Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.

?When less than one percent of the population has served, it?s hard for the other 99 percent to relate to their experience and then be like: ?Yes, this person can help my bottom line.? ?

But there?s a great need to bridge that gap ? on both sides.?Since Sept. 11, 2001, 2.7 million US veterans have served in the military. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, their unemployment rate is 9.2 percent ? compared with 7.6 percent of nonveterans ? and young workers and women suffer even higher rates.?Over a million more Iraq and Afghanistan-era veterans are expected to return to civilian life in the next five years.?

Canon Vixia HF R300

With video-capable phones and cameras, consumer camcorders?are in a tough spot when it comes to balancing price and usefulness. The Canon Vixia HF M50?($649.99, 3 stars) captures great video, but at that price, you might as well get a high-end digital camera that also takes great still images. The Canon Vixia HF R300 ($349.99 direct) falls in the lower range of the company's consumer camcorder line, but offers a far more compelling combination of performance and value. It lacks some of the low-light prowess found in the M50, but takes the advantage with a wider angle lens and 32x optical zoom. The smaller sensor still produces some great looking high-definition video, making the R300 a solid choice for the weekend videographer looking for a no-frills, easy-to-use standalone camcorder.

Design and Features
The R300 looks a lot like the higher-end M50, measuring 2.2 by 2.1 by 4.5 inches (HWD) and weighing in at 8.8 ounces. It feels a bit flimsier than the M50 (2.5 by 2.7 by 4.8 inches / 10.9 ounces), but is still comfortable to hold and shoot for long periods. The control layout is nearly identical on the R300 and M50, with a Record button on the right side, where your thumb naturally sits, and a zoom rocker on top, within reach of your index finger. In the LCD recess are Video Snap, Home, and Playback buttons, as well as a 3.5mm headphone and microphone jack, mini HDMI out, and mini USB out. There is no built-in memory, only a single slot for an SD, SDHC, or SDXC card. The lens cover is engaged and disengaged by a small switch to its right, which is less convenient than the automatic cover on the M50.?

All controls are accessed with the 3-inch touch-screen LCD. It definitely gives the R300 a clean and minimalist look, but I found navigating the touch menus to be a bit cumbersome. Focus, white balance, and exposure are all buried in touch menus, and getting precise control is too difficult. With this type of camcorder, however, I expect most users will stick to the fully automatic mode, which I found to be fast and accurate in most situations. The 230k-dot LCD is the same as the one found on the M50, and is still a bit too grainy and dim for bright outdoor light.

The R300 uses a smaller 1/4.85-inch HD CMOS sensor, but also packs a far more versatile lens. The 32x zoom lens features a 38.5-1232mm focal length (35mm equivalent) with an f/1.8-4.5 aperture, which is wider and longer than the M50's 10x zoom (43.4-436mm) with its f/1.8-3.0 aperture. Canon advertises a 51x zoom factor, using what it calls the Advanced Zoom feature, but really this is just a combination of optical and digital zoom.?

Performance and Conclusions
Though it lacks the "Pro" designation found on the M50, the R300 is a capable shooter, capturing crisp and clear high-definition video. You can choose from three shooting modes?Auto, Manual, and Cinema?with the latter simulating the look and frame rate of most film projects. Video format and quality can also be adjusted, with the highest setting, MXP, recording 1080i60 video in AVCHD format. Much like the M50, the R300 is limited to interlaced video as opposed to progressive, capturing 60 interlaced fields per second and encoding the video at 30 frames per second.

The resulting video is very similar to the M50, which is to say good, with sharp detail and fine textures. White balance is a bit less accurate with the R300, with colors skewing towards cooler hues. The smaller sensor means smaller pixels, which results in reduced low-light performance. The difference is most evident in the amount of image noise apparent in low-lighting situations. The M50 excelled, while the R300 showed noticeable grain in low-light. It didn't ruin the video by any means, but it is evident when playing back on large screen HDTVs.

Image stabilization is solid, helping steady shots at both the wide end and telephoto max. The 32x zoom is impressive, and could really come in handy if filming, say, a school play from the back row of a large auditorium. Obviously even powered image stabilization can only do so much, and when fully zoomed, video had the same dreamy wobble found on the M50, though it was a bit more noticeable on the R300. Autofocus was quick and accurate, and I actually encountered fewer instances where the focus would shift to the background inadvertently than on the M50. Audio quality was on par with the M50, with similar issues with picking up wind and other ambient room noises. And as with the M50, the R300 has a 3.5mm mic input for better audio capture with an external microphone.?

When compared with video captured by a point-and-shoot camera, like our Editors' Choice Canon PowerShot S100?($429.99, 4.5 stars), the R300's video lacked some of the saturation and vibrancy, but was able to achieve similar levels of detail and sharpness. The R300 does have an advantage in moving shots, like a slow pan, where the S100 turned in slightly choppy video. Still images, which are captured at 2-megapixel resolution, however, don't loook great on the R300, with too much image noise and loss of finer details.

The Canon Vixia HF R300 strikes a solid balance between performance, features, and price. At $349.99 it's less expensive than most digital cameras that shoot comparable video. It lacks the built-in memory, Wi-Fi, and low light performance of the M50, but also costs considerably less. A solid camera like the PowerShot S100 is more versatile, taking far better stills and capturing relatively sharp 1080p video. However, if you're sold on the traditional camcorder form-factor, the R300 is a solid, easy to use, and relatively affordable option for more casual shooters.

Football: Switzerland humble Germany

Eren Derdiyok gets the congratulations of teammates on his way to a hat-trick in Switzerland's 5-3 win over Germany.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Switzerland beat Germany 5-3 in friendly international in Basel
  • Eren Derdiyok scores hat-trick for the rampant Swiss
  • World and European champions Spain beat Serbia 2-0
  • Netherlands lose 2-1 at home to Bulgaria

(CNN) -- Germany's build-up to Euro 2012 suffered a setback Saturday with a 5-3 defeat to Switzerland in Basel.

It was the first time the Swiss, who did not qualify for this summer's tournament, had beaten Germany in an international since 1956.

German coach Joachim Loew fielded an understrength team as he rested eight Bayern Munich players who were involved in the Champions League final defeat to Chelsea last weekend.

But the performance of their understudies will do little to inspire confidence, with goalkeeper Ter Stegen having a forgettable error-strewn match as the Germans lost for the second time in a row.

Having gone through Euro qualifying unbeaten, they were beaten by France 2-1 in their last friendly in February.

Swiss striker Eren Derdiyok, who plays in the Bundesliga, scored a hat-trick and put his team 2-0 ahead with two first half goals in three minutes.

We didn't expect a result like this and we cannot be satisfied by it
Joachim Loew

Both goals were laid on by strike partner Tranquillo Barnettas before defender Mats Hummels pulled one back for Germany just before halftime with a header from a Mesut Ozil cross.

But Derdiyok made it 3-1 after 50 minutes, again from a Barnettas assist.

Andre Schuerrle cut the lead to give Germany some hope before Andre Lichtsteiner made it 4-2 in the 67th minute. Marco Reus added the third for the Germans five minutes later but Admir Mehmedi sealed victory for the Swiss and made it 5-3 late on.

"We didn't expect a result like this and we cannot be satisfied by it," Loew told AFP.

Meanwhile, Spain warmed up for a defense of their European title with a 2-0 friendly win over Serbia in a friendly played in Switzerland.

Coach Vicente del Bosque was also forced to field a second string line-up with many of his players involved in Friday's Copa del Rey final between Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao.

Atletico Madrid's Adrian Lopez, a second half substitute, headed the 2010 World Cup winners in front in the 64th minute.

He was then pulled down by Serbia captain Branislav Ivanovic to earn a 75th minute penalty, converted by Santi Cazorla.

Spain announce their 23-man squad for Poland and the Ukraine Sunday.

Portugal, captained by Cristiano Ronaldo, were held to a disappointing 0-0 draw by Macedonia in Leiria.

Their group rivals in the Euro finals, Denmark, were beaten 3-1 by a young Brazil side, who are preparing for the London Olympics, in a friendly in Hamburg.

Porto striker Hulk scored twice with Denmark's Niki Zimling turning an Oscar cross into his own net for the other goal.

Nicklas Bendtner pulled a goal back for the well-beaten Danes.

The Netherlands also went down to a friendly defeat, losing 2-1 at home to Bulgaria.

Arsenal's Robin van Persie gave the Dutch a 45th minute lead but Bulgaria, who did not make Euro 2012, equalized four minutes into the second half with an Ivelin Popov penalty after Rafael van der Vaart had hand balled.

Bulgaria striker Ilijan Mizanski grabbed a shock winner in the second minute of injury time as the home side pushed forward and were caught on the break.

Truly Inspiring - BUTTERFLY BLOG for the Brain Tumor Foundation ...

Savannah was diagnosed with brain cancer on August 14, 2006, but that is not where her story begins. In March 2005 she was diagnosed with Diabetes Insipidus (DI); a disorder caused by the brain not sending signals to the pituitary gland for a hormone to be released to absorb excess water from the kidneys. One of the causes of DI is a brain tumor, so Savannah had a MRI in March 2005. No tumor was detected. She began taking the needed hormone by mouth twice a day and saw an endocrinologist regularly.

Toward the end of 2nd grade Savannah started complaining of headaches. In June 2006 she had her 8-year-old checkup and she failed the eye exam; we thought that explained the headaches. We made an appointment with an eye doctor for the end of July and went on about our summer. When Savannah?s eyes were examined on July 31, 2006 no problems were detected. Savannah was not acting like herself; she was sleeping a lot and moody. I called her pediatrician and we discussed doing another MRI. From that MRI her tumor was found. We were sent to Atlanta on August 4, 2006, but once we got there found out our insurance was not accepted. An appointment was made to go to Shands in Gainesville, FL, but the pediatric neurosurgeon was on vacation until August 14 ? so we waited. We thought her tumor was benign at this point, due to the location and how it ?looked? on the MRI. Toward the end of the week of waiting Savannah started to deteriorate; she was vomiting, sleeping much of the time and losing her eyesight.

We got to Shands on August 13, 2006 and went to the ER. They did blood work and another MRI on August 14. The blood work showed Savannah had cancer. She had a mixed germ cell brain tumor near her pituitary. She received six rounds of chemo and then had brain surgery to try to remove what was left of the tumor. Unfortunately, the 1cm tumor that remained was not able to be removed, but the surgeon is fairly certain it is basically scar tissue. After Savannah healed from brain surgery she had six weeks of cranio-spinal proton radiation in Jacksonville, FL. Savannah was declared ?cancer free? when her treatment ended on March 13, 2007!

Although treatment for the cancer is over, childhood cancer survivors are far from ?out of the woods?. Childhood cancer survivors battle the rest of their lives. Chemo and radiation have long term effect ? a few are: cognitive loss, fertility issues and personality changes. These special survivors are at an increased risk for developing other cancers due to their treatments. Due to the location of Savannah?s tumor she has no pituitary function and must replace all hormones, including growth hormone shots she endures every night.

Savannah is now a bright, beautiful, fun-loving 13-year-old. She has yearly MRI?s and checkups with her oncologist and sees her endocrinologist every four months. Savannah is aware of how fortunate she is to be a survivor; she is our miracle!

Storm clouds loom over the global economy

The shadows over the global economy darkened this month as the euro zone's private sector contracted, U.S. manufacturing growth slowed and China's once-booming factories faltered, surveys showed on Thursday.

In Europe, a downturn that started in smaller states on the euro zone's periphery is now taking root in the core countries of Germany and France, where tepid growth had been the main ballast of support for the euro area economy.

"We are very much in a period of weakening global growth. It doesn't quite feel like 2008 yet but the danger is we could get there quicker than we think," said Peter Dixon at Commerzbank.

The euro zone composite PMI, comprising the services and manufacturing sectors, fell to 45.9 from April's 46.7, its lowest reading since June 2009 and its ninth month below the 50-mark that divides growth from contraction.

The data sent German Bund futures to a record high as investors sought relative safety, and the euro neared a two-year low against the dollar.

Wednesday's news that European Union leaders have been advised by senior officials to prepare contingency plans in case Greece quits the single currency also hurt the euro.

US momentum slows, China brakes
Europe's woes were felt across the Atlantic.

Financial information firm Markit's "flash" U.S. manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index slipped to 53.9 in May from 56.0, with slower export sales sapping momentum.

Markit, which also compiles the euro zone PMIs, released its U.S. index for the first time on Thursday but has been tracking data in the entire sector since late 2009.

"The cause seems to lie largely with weak export sales, which likely reflects the deteriorating economic situation in Europe as well as slower growth in China," said Markit chief economist Chris Williamson.

HSBC's Flash China PMI, the earliest indicator of China's industrial sector, retreated to 48.7 in May from a final reading of 49.3 in April. It marked the seventh straight month that the index has been below 50.

The figures signal that the sluggish economic conditions of the first quarter are set to continue throughout the first half of the year in China's longest slowdown since the global financial crisis.

"The series of highly disappointing April activity data - exports, imports, industrial production and retail sales indicators all fell short of even the most pessimistic forecasts - the first gauge for economic activity in the current month is a further signal that internal and external headwinds are still biting into economic momentum," said Nikolaus Keis at UniCredit.

The HSBC PMI has provided a contrast to the Chinese government's official PMI, which includes more state-owned firms with better access to credit. The government PMI hit a 13-month high of 53.3 in April as exports ticked higher although domestic orders showed signs of weakness.

US summer slowdown?
Manufacturing has been a bright spot for the U.S. economy, with the Markit index showing the sector has expanded for 32 straight months. The U.S. PMI index's average reading in 2011 was 54.3.

But as the pace of hiring across the economy has slowed in recent months, economists worry about whether demand will hold up this summer.

"We are seeing slower growth globally, including China," said Sam Bullard, senior economist at Wells Fargo in Charlotte, North Carolina. "Manufacturers remain cautious. We have seen evidence of softer equipment demand in the first quarter and that softness will likely continue into the second quarter."

Separate data showed orders for long-lasting U.S. durable goods rose less than expected as firms scaled back plans to add machinery and the military ordered fewer aircraft.

Meanwhile, first-time applications for U.S. jobless benefits fell slightly in the latest week, the Labor Department said on Thursday, though data earlier this month showed employers in April added the fewest new jobs to their payrolls since October.

Euro crumbles
In Europe, even the core countries are running into trouble. The manufacturing sector in Germany, Europe's largest economy, contracted at a far greater pace than was expected, and its service sector saw minimal growth. In France, both sectors contracted faster than predicted by most economists.

German business sentiment also dropped for the first time in seven months in May, the Ifo think tank said, missing even the most conservative forecasts.

Across the channel, Britain's economy shrank by more than initially thought between January and March, hit by the deepest fall in construction output in three years.

For the euro zone, Markit said the composite reading was consistent with gross domestic product, which stagnated in the first quarter, falling by at least 0.5 percent across the region in the current quarter.

"The flash PMI figures for May look horrible and provide a clear warning that euro zone GDP will almost certainly show a contraction in Q2 after stagnating in Q1," said Martin van Vliet at ING.

Commerzbank's Dixon said, "It clearly indicates that the evaporating sentiment seen in recent weeks as the Greece crisis has intensified is having a big impact on the economy."

The prospect of a Greek exit from the euro zone is now being openly discussed as the country battles political and economic upheaval and faces an election on June 17.

Two recent Reuters polls of money market traders and economists each had slim majorities saying Greece would still be a member of the 17-nation bloc at the end of the end of 2013.

Researchers identify protein necessary for behavioral flexibility

Thursday, May 24, 2012

Researchers have identified a protein necessary to maintain behavioral flexibility, which allows us to modify our behaviors to adjust to circumstances that are similar, but not identical, to previous experiences. Their findings, which appear in the journal Cell Reports, may offer new insights into addressing autism and schizophrenia?afflictions marked by impaired behavioral flexibility.

Our stored memories from previous experiences allow us to repeat certain tasks. For instance, after driving to a particular location, we recall the route the next time we make that trip. However, sometimes circumstances change?one road on the route is temporarily closed?and we need to make adjustments to reach our destination. Our behavioral flexibility allows us to make such changes and, then, successfully complete our task. It is driven, in part, by protein synthesis, which produces experience-dependent changes in neural function and behavior.

However, this process is impaired for many, preventing an adjustment in behavior when faced with different circumstances. In the Cell Reports study, the researchers sought to understand how protein synthesis is regulated during behavioral flexibility.

To do so, they focused on the kinase PERK, an enzyme that regulates protein synthesis. PERK is known to modify eIF2alpha, a factor that is required for proper protein synthesis. Their experiments involved comparing normal lab mice, which possessed the enzyme, with those that lacked it.

In their study, the mice were asked to navigate a water maze, which included elevating themselves onto a platform to get out of the water. Normal mice and those lacking PERK learned to complete this task.

However, in a second step, the researchers tested the mice's behavioral flexibility by moving the maze's platform to another location, thereby requiring them to respond to a change in the terrain. Here, the normal mice located the platform, but those lacking PERK were unable to do so or took significantly more time to complete the task.

A second experiment offered a different test of the role of PERK in aiding behavioral flexibility. In this measure, both normal and mutant mice heard an audible tone that was followed by a mild foot shock. At this stage, all of the mice developed a normal fear response?freezing at the tone in anticipation of the foot shock. However, the researchers subsequently removed the foot shock from the procedure and the mice heard only the tone. Eventually, the normal mice adjusted their responses so they did not freeze after hearing the tone. However, the mutant mice continued to respond as if they expected a foot shock to follow.

The researchers sought additional support for their conclusion that the absence of PERK may contribute to impaired behavioral flexibility in human neurological disorders. To do so, they conducted postmortem analyses of human frontal cortex samples from patients afflicted with schizophrenia, who often exhibit behavioral inflexibility, and unaffected individuals. The samples from the control group showed normal levels of PERK while those from the schizophrenic patients had significantly reduced levels of the protein.

"A rapidly expanding list of neurological disorders and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Fragile X syndrome, have already been linked to aberrant protein synthesis," explained Eric Klann, a professor in NYU's Center for Neural Science and one of the study's co-authors. "Our results show the significance of PERK in maintaining behavioral flexibility and how its absence might be associated with schizophrenia. Further studies clarifying the specific role of PERK-regulated protein synthesis in the brain may provide new avenues to tackle such widespread and often debilitating neurological disorders."

DeMarco: Some surprises among MLB's early award winners

Atlanta's Beachy a Cy Young contender, while Wright's bat carrying Mets

Mets slugger David Wright is flirting with .400 during the first third of the season.

ANALYSIS

By Tony DeMarco

NBCSports.com contributor

updated 6:19 p.m. ET May 24, 2012

Tony DeMarco

Memorial Day weekend means the season's rapidly rolling along ? the one-third mark rapidly is approaching. In other words, general managers have had enough time to know what they have on their rosters, and more importantly, what they still need in what surely will be wide-open playoff chases.

And, we've had enough time to make the following observations that have gone beyond the it's-still-early category:

AWARD LEADERS

AL MVP: When you're a couple of batting average points from having a Triple Crown winner, this one is obvious. Josh Hamilton is the best player on what clearly has been baseball's best team. Not to ignore the great starts for Paul Konerko and Adam Jones, though. Konerko actually led Hamilton in batting average and on-base percentage through Wednesday.

NL MVP: It was unanimously Matt Kemp in April. Then he slumped, went on the disabled list and the Dodgers won six in a row without him. So at this point, we'll go with David Wright, who through Wednesday had the remarkable slash line of .399/.497/.601 in leading the surprising Mets.

AL Cy Young: Nothing mysterious here ? Justin Verlander is first or second in the AL in innings, strikeouts, ERA, WHIP and wins. Much more surprising are the great first two months of Jake Peavy, Derek Lowe, Brandon Morrow and Chris Sale.

NL Cy Young: The statistical difference between favorite Clayton Kershaw and still-unknown Atlanta pitcher Brandon Beachy boils down to Kershaw's better strikeout-walk ratio (4-1 to 3-1). Which makes Beachy's story all the better: Undrafted free agent out of Indiana Wesleyan University, signed for $20,000, started his minor-league career in the bullpen, and four years later, a Cy Young-caliber starter.

AL Manager of the Year: It can only be Buck Showalter, as the Orioles were a near-unanimous spring choice for another last-place finish in the AL East. Nobody knows how long they can hang around, but there are enough positive signs throughout the organization for legitimate optimism. This also could be the year Manny Acta gets his due, while Joe Maddon remains the most interesting manager in the world.

NL Manager of the Year: Nobody was paying attention when the Dodgers turned the corner last August and went 34-20 down the stretch. But everybody is aware of Don Mattingly's team now, as it sat 30 games over .500 at 64-34 in its last 98 games through Wednesday.

It's who Mattingly is winning with that makes his case. Kemp, Mark Ellis, Juan Rivera, Juan Uribe, Jerry Hairston Jr. currently are on the disabled list, Dee Gordon was benched then dropped to eighth in the order, and James Loney's power struggles continue. Yet the wins keep mounting with lineups including Jerry Sands, Justin Sellers, Elian Herrara, Scott Van Slyke and Ivan DeJesus.

AL Rookie of the Year: He's no rookie, of course -- not when it took over $100 million to get him out of Japan. But Yu Darvish is eligible for the award and gets it at this point. But Mike Trout is making it interesting, isn't he?

NL Rookie of the Year: We know where this likely is leading as the season unfolds -- Bryce Harper. Especially when this isn't a particularly strong year for NL rookies. Wade Miley, Yonder Alonso, Zack Cozart and Kirk Nieuwenhuis are off to nice starts.

Best surprise team: Given what's written above in the NL Manager of Year category, the Dodgers shouldn't be a huge surprise. But they have built a solid lead in both the division and wild-card races, and new ownership will add at the trade deadline.

Also, the Nationals have risen to the top of the NL East behind great starting pitching ? and without Michael Morse (expected back in June), Drew Storen (expected back in July) and Brad Lidge (expected back in June).

Most disappointing team: Tie: Angels and Tigers. Albert Pujols has been far from alone, as Erick Aybar, Ervin Santana, Dan Haren and Peter Bourjos also have underachieved. Injuries/losses of Chris Iannetta, Torii Hunter, Vernon Wells have been costly. The bullpen had to undergo a reconstruction and appears to be settling. The infusion of Mike Trout and Mark Trumbo in the every-day lineup has lit some recent offensive sparks.

As it's turning out in Detroit, Miguel Cabrera playing third base has been less of an issue than Prince Fielder playing first base. The offense's problems lie with the supporting cast ? with the obvious exception of Austin Jackson. The bullpen could be bolstered by the trade deadline, but there is hope for the rotation with Doug Fister's return and the expectation that Max Scherzer and Rick Porcello will lower current 5-plus ERAs.

The two-month All-Stars
AL?
1B: Paul Konerko, 2B: Robinson Cano, SS: Derek Jeter, 3B: Adrian Beltre, OF: Josh Hamilton, Austin Jackson, Adam Jones, C: Joe Mauer, SP: Justin Verlander, Closer: Jim Johnson.

NL ? C: Carlos Ruiz, 1B: Brian LaHair, 2B: Omar Infante, SS: Rafael Furcal, 3B: David Wright, OF: Matt Kemp, Melky Cabrera, Ryan Braun; SP: Clayton Kershaw, Closer: Jonathan Papelbon.

Biggest disappointments: 1B: Albert Pujols; 2B: Rickie Weeks; SS: Erick Aybar; 3B: Pedro Alvarez; OF: Jeff Francouer, Logan Morrison, Peter Bourjos; C: Nick Hundley; SP: Tim Lincecum, Clay Buchholz, Francisco Liriano; RP: Carlos Marmol, Francisco Cordero.

By the numbers: How much better are the Rangers than the rest of the AL?: Through Wednesday, they led the majors with a +79 run differential. The next-highest AL team was Toronto at +35, and no other team was better than +17.

How much worse are the Twins than the rest of the AL? Through Wednesday, they sported a -69 run differential. Next worse in the AL were the Royals at -22.

Which surprise team is least likely to sustain its current winning percentage? Taking nothing away from the job Terry Collins has done in a very tough situation, the Mets had a 24-20 record despite a -29 run differential through Wednesday.

With the exact same run differential, the Brewers were 18-26. And the Rockies were 16-27 with a -27 run differential. How have the Mets gotten there? They're 9-5 in one-run games, but have lost by scores of 8-2, 14-6, 9-3, 6-1, 7-2, 18-9, 8-1, 8-0 and 14-5.

Kermit the Frog uses Carbon Credits! ? Real Estate Inspection ...

As Kermit the frog might have said, ?I was green before it was popular to be green.?

Green FrogThe ?Green? movement has its roots in the late 60?s with the ?back-to-the land? movement?-when people really started to think not just about alternative life styles but different methods of building?-including sustainability.? It could easily be argued that the father and mother of the back-to-the-land movement were Helen and Scott Nearing.? They started ?Living the Good Life??in 1932?a logical reaction to the Great Depression.? (Is this starting to sound like d?j? vu all over again?) ?Prior to Helen and Scott there were various other societal breakaways from the Shakers & Quakers to the Pilgrims?-but these were more religious than geo-political?-but nonetheless some of the early ?green roots??-if only in attitude.

By the time an idea becomes mainstream, trendy, or common, it has usually had its roots planted at another time?-growing, mutating and blossoming into its current form.

My own roots as a builder began in 1971, living off the land in rural upstate NY, in a Ferro-cement dome?-and I was a huge fan of Helen and Scott.

Ferro-cement Dome

Ferro-cement Dome

There is an old article in a 1978 issue of Mother Earth News? that talks about the prototype for a much larger one that my first wife Jill and I built.? (My oldest daughter was born in the later version.) At the time, I was really into building with very simple readily available materials?-I quickly learned that this desire had to be balanced with the ability to heat the dang thing efficiently.? It would have made a better chicken coop?and did.

Eventually my house designs evolved into what became commonly known as ?Passive Solar??-where passive (non mechanical) construction techniques were used to improve the energy efficiency of the home.? These approaches, among other things, included more insulation, and orientation of the home to take advantage of the sun?-which would result in increasing the amount of windows in the path of the sun, while decreasing them elsewhere.? A more complete explanation of this type of building can be found in A Reasoned Indictment of the Green Movement.

In my opinion the ?Green? movement has not paid enough attention to the energy saving aspects of homes and yet part of its mission is to lower the use of fossil fuels.? While changing your light bulbs to CFL?s may be a good thing to do, it is nothing like what a revolution in the way homes are designed and built would do.? Every day, homes that meet the ?highest certifications? of the green movement are being built completely disconnected from the earth?-vented crawl spaces with insulated floors.? Metaphorically speaking, it is usually a good idea to stay connected to Mother Earth.

It is easy to get caught up in the ?hype? and ?smoke-and-mirrors? of Carbon Credits; or, taking farm land out of food production to support bio-diesel.? Since the early 70?s there have been simpler more cost effective ways to actually reduce the use of fossil fuels and ease our guilty conscience at the same time.? While, as a transition, Carbon Credits may be necessary to encourage business to do the right thing, is it the right thing to give Carbon Credits to companies that make things we don?t REALLY need?? You know the things I am talking about?-the things that recycle from yard sale to yard sale?? How much oil could be saved annually if businesses were not allowed to run the signs on their buildings when they aren?t open?

This leads me to conclude that there are many different colors of frogs?-and that not all green is green?-but it is getting there.

Relationship Connection: The silent marriage - St. George Utah Events

silentmarriage

?

Geoff Steurer is a licensed marriage and family therapist in private practice in St. George, UT. He specializes in working with couples in all stages of their relationships. The opinions stated in this article are solely his and not those of St. George News.

Question:

My husband and I have nothing to talk about. We go on dates and just sit there and watch other people and talk very little. It?s like that at home, too. We?ve been married for 16 years and it seems like we just go through the motions most of the time. I?m worried about us not having anything to say to each other. Is this normal?

Answer:

While it?s hard to say what?s ?normal? for any couple, it?s clear this pattern appears to be distressing to you and possibly your husband. It?s worth looking at and figuring out what can be done.

There are lots of reasons couples can go silent. In my professional experience, the two most common contributors are unresolved resentment and the disconnection that results from failing to nurture the marriage relationship.

Unresolved resentments can come from previous injuries to the relationships, such as betrayals or misunderstandings. If these injuries aren?t adequately resolved in favor of the couple, then there can be hard feelings that keep the couple distant.

If you don?t see any unresolved issues in your heart, gently ask your husband if there are things that he?s still upset about from the past that need to be discussed. Give him a chance to think about it and then get back together to discuss. Sometimes it takes a while for these to surface. If the coast is clear, then I recommend looking at ways to get the two of you reconnected as a couple.

Dr. Bill Doherty said that ?one of the biggest threats to modern-day marriage is daily living.? In other words, if couples aren?t proactive about capturing time together, they will wake up one day and realize they don?t even know each other.

I?m guessing you didn?t lack for conversation when you were dating. Most couples have plenty to talk about when they?re getting to know one another. It?s typically the daily grind of life, parenting, work, and other commitments that makes it tough to nurture the marriage.

Sometimes a marriage simply needs a ?booster shot? in the form of a couple?s getaway. This shouldn?t be any vacation, but rather a chance to specifically get reacquainted with one another. It?s a way of showing each other that your marriage is a priority.

You might also consider changing up your dating routine. If you?ve been doing ?dinner and a movie? for years, maybe it?s time to mix it up a bit and try something new that will get you talking. Our brains crave novelty and it makes for great conversation!

The marriage should be thought of as a separate entity that needs to be nurtured on a daily basis. I?m a big fan of the book ?Take Back Your Marriage? by Dr. Bill Doherty, which explains how couples can resist the pull of life to keep their marriage front and center.

The most important thing you can do is keep working to build the connection to your husband. Instead of complaining that it?s boring to be married to him, let him know how important he is to you and how much you want to interact with him. Find out if he feels the same way. You might be surprised!
