A dazzling, Hollywood smile is considered beautiful, but did you know that it could also improve your mood and the moods of others?
Peter Totterdell, a professor at the University of Sheffield in England, says, ?If you put two people in a room facing each other, without talking to each other, their moods will converge, or more likely, the mood of the less expressive person will move towards the mood of the more expressive person.? Another study reveals that a slow-onset smile ? over half a second ? with a little head tilt are perceived as attractive and trustworthy.
The main component of a pretty smile is, of course, pretty teeth. If not properly taken care of, dental problems could lead to heart disease, heart attacks, respiratory disease and strokes. There are many theories in the medical and dental communities as to why this can happen.?? Dana Cuculici, DMD, of Carrollwood Dental Spa in Tampa, Florida explains that, ?Periodontal disease is an infectious disease caused by germs. Plaque and calculus are loaded with germs that can get carried through the bloodstream to the heart. Getting sick more often can be related to infection in the mouth.?
Another explanation?is that oral bacteria can affect the heart because it enters the bloodstream and attaches fatty plaque to the heart blood vessels, which could cause clots. Blood clots can restrict the amount of blood flow which leads to a lack of nutrients and can ultimately lead to a heart attack.
According to the American Academy of Periodontology, ?People with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease as those without periodontal disease.? Dr. Cuculici recommends electric toothbrushes over manual ones because she maintains the electric toothbrushes do a much better job at removing plaque and stains than regular toothbrushes.
Daily flossing is also a must. A cute joke that has been circulating forever is, ?You should only floss the teeth you want to keep.? Flossing removes bacteria from between teeth that your toothbrush may have missed, but it also stimulates the gums, increasing circulation.
Forming good oral hygiene habits is essential for overall health. Not to mention, when your teeth look great, you?re likely to smile more often and a smile could have a positive effect on people around you.
